The Evil Twin Of Downadup

Computer worm has gotten a twin now

The developers of the aggressive worm called downadup has come out with a more aggressive version which is even more malicious than the original worm.

The worm called Downadup or Conficker has infected around 10.5 million ocmputers so far according to information available to us now from the security firm SRI.

If your computer gets infected by this worm it is instructed to perform several malicious operations within your computer as well as other computers it is in connection with at any given time. The virus can send spam mail, key logging, or even run denial of service operations (DDOS) attacks.

Microsoft, together with Symantec, Verisign and Internet Corperation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) have joined forces to block some of the IP addresses of computers the worm is using in the ghost networks to spread its evil task.

In addition Microsoft has promised a money prize to those who can tip them about who has made this virus. The prize money is 250.000 USD.

The fight against the original virus can be one of the main drivers for the development of the twin virus which has been detected.

The twin virus is called Conficker B++, and is even more flexible than the original version. The new version was first discovered on February 6th 2009.

The new virus is even more difficult to stop than the original version. Security companies have been able to break the algorithm the worm is using to contact the around thousand web pages it uses to perform its duties, however the new worm is less dependant upon these web sites now.

According to SRI, the coders have tried to find ways that makes it not necessary to contact these web pages. The report from SRI is very detailed and illustrates in great detail how to dissect the worm and lets you look at source code and diagrams on how it operates.
